New meadows and grasslands are in the process of being created here at Walthamstow Wetlands. Scientists claim that there has been a 45% decline in numbers of invertebrates since the 70s. By planting wildflower meadows, it is hoped that biodiversity can be improved. Grasslands and meadows provide homes for various insects including caterpillars, spiders, butterflies and moths. They are also the source of food and nesting materials for birds whilst proving many hiding places for frogs and toads.
